Pallet or Pallet-Free Block Production: Compare the Whole Workflow

Removing a production pallet from one stage does not remove every handling or storage requirement from a block business. Likewise, adding pallets is not by itself an automation upgrade. Compare the complete workflow around the machine before judging either arrangement on the cost of pallets alone.

Confirm the exact forming support

Ask the supplier where newly formed blocks are supported during stripping and immediately afterward. In a board-based arrangement, identify the production board and its specifications. In a ground-forming arrangement, obtain the manufacturer’s requirements for the forming surface and machine movement.

Do not confuse a production board with a shipping pallet used for cured products. They may have different purposes, dimensions and handling arrangements. Mark each support separately on your proposed layout and quotation.

Trace what happens after forming

Draw the route from the forming position to the next approved stage of handling and curing. State which movements are manual and which require equipment. Ask when the units may be moved under the approved process and how that decision is verified.

For context, Columbia’s product-handling information distinguishes the movement of green and cured products. That distinction is useful for planning, but its large-plant equipment specifications should not be copied to a different machine or smaller yard.

Plan the support return cycle

For a pallet-based system, ask how production boards return to the machine and where they are checked and stored. Include the quantity tied up in production, curing and return, rather than counting only boards visible beside the press.

For ground-forming production, examine when each area becomes available again and how the next forming position is prepared. Keep product storage, access routes and machine travel visible. “Pallet-free” should not be treated as “no space required.”

Compare costs under the same boundary

Use separate budget lines for supports, surface preparation, handling equipment, storage and maintenance. Leave uncertain items marked as quotations required. Do not compare a bare mobile machine against a board-based package that includes equipment for several additional stages.

Ask how changes in block type affect the arrangement. Product height, configuration and approved handling procedures may alter the planning assumptions. Confirm the exact products and operating conditions on both quotations.

Make the decision on documented fit

Question Pallet-based arrangement Ground-forming arrangement
Forming support Board specification Surface requirement
Space tied up Boards and product route Forming positions and cleared areas
Handling Product and board movement Product collection and machine travel
Reuse cycle Board return and inspection Surface availability and preparation

Complete the table with supplier-confirmed information from your actual proposals. It is a comparison framework, not a claim that one method is always faster or cheaper. The right answer depends on the complete equipment and site plan.
